Living Layers

Living Layers Art Exhibition, Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre

Living Layers explores the accumulation of time, memory and sensation embedded within painted surfaces. Each layer acts as a trace of movement, emotion and experience, echoing the way landscapes hold histories beneath what is immediately visible. Marks are built, concealed, softened and/or disrupted through successive gestures, mirroring the way we encounter and process the world around us.

Working across materials such as acrylic, oil, chalk, textured mediums, handmade paper, gold leaf, and metallic elements, I explore the tension and harmony that emerge through their interaction. At times, the process asserts itself, guiding the work beyond intention and allowing the painting to arrive at its own resolution.

My practice is informed by artists and movements that privilege the expressive and conceptual possibilities of paint. The influence of abstraction, particularly Gerhard Richter’s expansive approach to the medium, sits alongside an affinity with Impressionist sensibilities — a commitment to perception, presence, and the act of seeing. Cézanne’s orchestration of colour, where complementary tones construct depth and spatial rhythm, continues to shape my visual language.
It is my hope that these works can now enter lived spaces where they might invite reflection, cultivate atmosphere, and quietly unfold over time — gathering new meanings and becoming part of the new environments they inhabit.
